X Defends Student’s Free Speech: University of Illinois Drops Disciplinary Action

Victory for Free Speech: X Supports Student’s Right to Post About Campus Food

In a significant win for free speech advocates, X has successfully defended the rights of a student whose X posts about free food on campus were met with disciplinary action from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The university has now dropped all charges and closed the case against Juan David Campolargo.

Mr. Campolargo faced threats of dismissal from his on-campus job and eviction from student housing due to his X posts, which the university claimed violated the Student Code of Conduct. He was also accused of taking food that the catering staff was discarding, with their permission, at one event.

Upon learning of Mr. Campolargo’s situation, X stepped in to support him and hired the Schaerr Jaffe law firm, at no cost to Mr. Campolargo, to appeal the university’s decision. The university initially resisted and even informed Mr. Campolargo that he was not allowed to be represented by a lawyer in their disciplinary proceedings.

In the end, Mr. Campolargo’s appeal was successful, and he is now free to continue posting on his X account without fear of retaliation. He can also maintain his on-campus job and student housing without any issues.

This case serves as a reminder that we must always remain vigilant in the face of threats and intimidation to protect our right to free speech, a cornerstone of democracy and a fundamental human right.

Even Elon Musk himself chimed in to give it a boost and so the world can see there is hope…
